Do you think Czech society could do with a bit of satire? We think so too. Especially as the celebrations of the Republic’s centenary are under way and the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Velvet Revolution is fast approaching! We do not want the celebrations to be limited to nostalgic wreath laying. For seven years the Velvet Carnival has been using the freedom democracy brought us to throw the light of satire on the things that trouble our society. This year there is a sugar topped wreath dessert to go with the fun. But first things first.
It is a now traditional satiric-carnival procession that marches through Prague on the Students Fight for Freedom and Democracy Day, November 17. There are students, NGOs and other civic society groups participating in it. It is a group of enthusiasts who give up their free time to make the manifestations that always take place on this day more fun.
Why should manifestations in the street be fun? It is easy to just point to problems around us and make the feelings of hopelessness stronger. Or to offer easy solutions to complex difficulties. We do not do that. We offer support and new ways to look at things. We think play is the best way to do this.
WE DO NOT USE BANNERS AND CHANTS. WE USE SATIRE, HUGE MASKS, MOVING OBJECTS WITH LIGHTS INSIDE, LIVE MUSIC, ACROBATS AND PAMPHLETS. BUT THIS COSTS MONEY.
It takes about six months to put the procession together. The creation of masks and other objects itself takes two months. This year the Velvet Carnival is supported by the municipality of Prague but that is only money to kick off. Without your help we cannot go through with it.
What better way is there to celebrate the 100 years of our republic than with intelligent and entertaining satire? We have prepared a month long festival of and about satire. From October 17 to November 17 in the Hybernská Campus (Hybernská 4) you will find performances, concerts, lectures and talks. You can find the info on www.kampushybernska.cz/100rokusatiry.
We are a group of people willing to spend all autumn creating masks and building lanterns in the hope of unmasking the true state of things that anger and frustrate us. And that intelligent satire and creativity can help change things or at least show them in a less frightening light. We hope to make the windmills fall in a gale of laughter.
