Do you want to enter the timespace gate to the Underworld, visit postapocalyptic Prater, obsessively pimped squat in the jungles of Hodonín or the carcosa of Holíč? Do you want to witness a majorettes performance in the dessert, fires of Zdeněk Škromach, synthpunk concert of Strauss and Brahms or the very best village of the South Moravian region of 2009?
Ondrej Jajcaj is a real person, rennaisance person, controversial graverobber, obsessed with dental prosthetics of the deceased. His dream is a mobile museum of dental prosthetics, which would tour villages and liberate people from fearing death.
Director Petr Šprincl has known Jajcaj for several years and decided to document the climax of Jajcaj's efforts. A journey in a caravan, across countryside to Vienna, where he intends to hand over the stolen teeth of Strauss and Brahms. The teeths, which Jajcaj stole himself.
Ondrej Jajcaj is a visionary, philosopher, scientist, writer, painter, musician and a youtuber. And a graverobber as well. He owns the largest collection of dental prosthetics in the world and decided to open his renaissance persona to the world. Death Over Gold follows Jajcaje and his entourage in a bizarre caravan, on their quest to root out the fear of Death.
Ondrej Jajcaj has been obsessed with death since childhood. From a graverobber, he turned into a self-proclaimed scientist-philosopher, focused on the dental prosthetics of the deceased - a tool to read and interpret history, at least for Ondrej Jajcaj. Jajcaj's goal is to liberate society from fearing death. To achieve this, he sets on a journey with his morbid mobile museum - the caravan of death, decorated in his peculiar style - with his dental prosthetics collection. With a couple of followers, Jajcaj and his freakshow tour the Czecho-Slovak countryside, during the times of summer festivities, and confront people with the phenomenon of death. The journey eventually turns to Vienna, where Jajcaj intends to hand over to Austrians the dental remnants of composers Johann Strausse Jr. and Johannes Brahms. The remnants, which Jajcaj himself took from their graves in the past. The majorettes juggle with femur bones and Jajcaj's caravan sets off towards the next village. The journey doesn't end, but continues in an endless loop.
In the summer of 2016, we travelled with Jajcaj's suite across the Moravian-Slovak-Austrian triangle, to cross the river Styx and reach Vienna. We shot a lot of great material and postproduction is now ahead of us. But this is just the beginning. In the summer of 2017, we will dust off the caravan and set off on a countryside tour, where we'll screen the finished film, there will be wine and maybe even Strauss and Brahms will perform.
The film itself was shot in the summer of 2016, with the support of the Czech Film Fund, Studio FAMU and especially with the generous dedication of our crew, which decided to spend their summer days with the caravan, generator smell, humongous amount of cigarettes and dental prosthetics. At this point, we need to help with the postproduction and preparations of the alternative distribution for next summer. The caravan's brakes and lights need to be repaired, it needs a thorough technical check-up and even horses need to eat something.
The author of the project is Petr Šprincl, director and visual artist, graduate from FaVU and a PhD student at Prague's AVU. The original concept comes from Ondrej Jajcaj, the screenplay was written by Matyáš Dlab, a dramaturg and a member of "Piča z hoven" band. The film Death Over Gold is joint collaboration of creatives from different fields, including film, videoart, performance, up to audiovisual discopunk musicians "I Love 69 Popgejů".
