Documentary film about the journey of the Cimrman English Theatre company who bring the first official translation of the Stand-In to America. The film should answer the question of major importance: Will Jara Cimrman conquer the New World?
Author: David Smoljak
What is our goal?
We want to record the unique journey of these English-speaking missionaries of Czech culture and follow Jára Cimrman’s steps in North America
How did it start?
It all started on 25 October 2014 with the first applause at the premiere of the Stand-In play in Prague. “It works!“ we said in surprise.
Two years later the theatre had the idea to bring Cimrman from Prague to the United States for few evenings. And the idea is coming to life now!
Details
Cimrman English Theatre is a group of English-speaking actors who settled in Prague and fell in love with the humour of Jara Cimrman´s plays. They perform two of Cimrman´s plays in Prague – The Stand-In (Záskok) and The Conquest of The North Pole (Dobytí severního pólu). From 20 to 2 April 2017 this theatre company will be wandering from New York City to Washington D.C. with the Stand-In play. We decided to shoot a documentary film about this mission of the Anglo-Saxon ambassadors of Czech culture on the North American continent.
We want to visit Thomas Edison Center in Menlo Park and discover if Edison´s inventions have Cimrman´s name on them. We also want to visit the Patent Office in Washington D.C. where the invention of the telephone was patented by Graham Bell in 1876 just five minutes before Jara Cimrman arrived to register the same invention. Last but not least we want to find out if the American audience will be laughing at the same jokes as we do.
Who are we?
We are devoted servants of the Czech genius who deserves overseas appreciation after years of slight and oblivion. We decided to follow the project through but we will appreciate your help with partially covering the costs of the film shoot.
Why do we do it?
We want to be part of this courageous experiment to try to succeed with a genuine Czech phenomenon right in the epicentre of world globalization. Whether it will be successful or not we think it needs to be recorded either as an unprecedented feator as a warning for the next generations.
