How did it start? In the childhood...

Many young boys love dinosaurs. A five years old Matej was not an exception. He quickly learned difficult names of prehistoric creatures and dreamed about a possibility to return back to a time when massive dinosaurs ruled the planet. His excitement about them has soon spread to all reptiles and he watched many wildlife documentaries and read zoological encyclopedias. And there he found it - THE KOMODO DRAGON - a recent beast, which is resembling the giants of the past. Right at that time he promised to himself that once he will travel to Komodo and see the biggest lizard on Earth. Years have passed and the enthusiastic boy became a trained zoologist and evolutionary biologist who studies animals in different parts of the world. But he did not forget about the place which he always wanted to explore...

What is our aim?

This summer Matej fulfilled his childhood dream and we went to the Komodo national park in Indonesia, where we filmed a documentary about dragons. We managed to film unique video including dragons hunting a deer or a female dragon during guarding her nest. But we spent many hours by filming other amazing animals, such as bright blue pit viper or spitting cobra. We believe that our material deserves a professional processing into a documentary movie and we are already editing the video material. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to pay a licenced original music and professional commentary recording. That is why we are asking you for help ...

Who we are?

We are Zuzana and Matej, partners in life and on the road, zoologists and documentarists. We have met during our studies of Ecological and Evolutionary Biology at Masaryk University in Brno and for four years we are complementing each other perfectly.

Zuzana has studied also Biology teaching and she is working for a long time in a field of children environmental education. Nowadays she works in the forest nursery Medlánka (Brno), where she awakens the love for nature in the youngest... Matej (born in Slovakia) does his PhD. studies and is employed at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology of Czech Academy of Sciences. His professional specialization and a lifelong passion is herpetology, the science focused on reptiles and amphibians. We both love nature and its diversity, beauty and color. Our greatest pleasure is observation of animals in their natural environment and that is why we travel around the world to find the most amazing creatures.

Living Zoology

On our expeditions we usually don't have time for resting, because we are intensely documenting the wonders of nature. After coming back home we use our photos and videos to show the public how amazing place full of fascinating creatures is our planet. Project Living Zoology covers all our activities focused on popularizing zoology and nature conservation. On the internet we present our wildlife photography, then we organize lectures and meetings, produce documentary films, organize environmental programs for children and much more.

Last summer we took a trip to national parks in Thailand and we created our first zoological and travel movie called Thailand: The land of snakes. This one hour documentary was made during 25 days without the film crew and with only a small amateur camera Canon LEGRIA R68. We were cinematographers, writers, sound experts and the main actors and every subsequent post-production was done only by us. All the music used in the film is free to download and use on the internet and accompanying commentary was recorded at a friend's locker room ... Despite of that our first documentary had great success at many projections and on the internet we had positive feedback. During filming and processing material from Thailand we gained a lot of experience and before this year's expeditions to Cameroon and Indonesia we bought more professional camera Canon LEGRIA G30 from third hand. We went to Komodo with huge commitment to get the best footage and move forward in our filmmaking skills. Thanks to theoretical preparations before the expedition, experienced guide Ajis, hard work on the location and also a portion of luck we managed to achieve all the goals that we set for ourselves on Komodo. And not only that, we witnessed natural dramas which we have never dreamed of ... Already on the plane on our way back home we were sure that we have a special material that deserves professional editing. We soon found out that if we want to improve the quality of post-production, we can not do it for free. One minute of original music from the music store costs about 37 EUR (and it is apparently a good price...), to pay for a recording studio is not cheap and also the commentator deserves a good payment. Additionally, we will record a commentary twice - in Czech and English language. Everything else we can do again by ourselves. We have been saving money for travelling and new technology for about a year, but we can't afford the additional costs of this non-commercial documentary. We hope that the film The Last Kingdom of Dragons will attract a wider audience and will help us to find sponsors for other future projects.

We believe that if we work on our projects with passion, love and dedication, we can succeed and fulfill our dreams and goals.

What will be the money used for?

  • To pay the original copyright music to the documentary film The Last Kingdom of Dragons
  • To rent a recording studio for recording the accompanying commentary to the film
  • To pay the professional commentator

And if we have any money left, or we will get more from you?

  • We will pay the original licenced music and professional commentary also for the documentary film Finding frogs in Cameroon (More here in official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38kJ-XaiQN8)
  • We will complete our filming and photographic equipment with some of the other necessities (better light for night filming, GoPro camera for authentic footage ...)
  • We will cover part of the costs for other planned expeditions, we now consider Costa Rica, Bolivia and South Africa

  9. The Komodo national park has fauna typical for both Asia and Australia, so you can observe there cockatoos typical for Australia or sambar deer typical for Asia
  10. On the island of Komodo you can swim and snorkel on one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world with pink sand
