ALS is HELPLESSNESS

There is about 800 people and the incidence is about 200 new patients with amyotrofic lateral sclerosis per year in Czech Republic. And the same number dies every year. It is a disease in which a person within two to five years gradually loses the ability to control muscles. The disease does not choose a weak individual with ill health, often reaches the people at the peak of their powers and creative potential – of the most famous cases we can mention the interpreter Dan Gauls, football player Marian Čišovsky or politician Stanislav Gross.

ALSA, z.s. is the only non profit in Czech Republic helping patients with ALS to fight their disease. There are no ALS interdisciplinary teams, no guidelines. ALS patients are in urgent needs of basic handicap aids and special aids maintaining their daily routine as communication and breathing. Thank you that you care!

The disease progresses rapidly and if the patient asks standardly the insurence company for the utility it happens that he is granted with it only when he does not need it anymore.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?

ALS patients need regular special physiotherapy, cough aids, electrically operated trucks, special assitant to help with eating, hygiene, dressing up etc. And the most expensive are means of communication, that helps them to comunicate after they loose their ability to speak. And they need it quickly, not after a very long approval process. Mental abilities of patients remain unchanged and so they are sharply aware of their helplessness.

We want to build a platform on which ALS patients will receive quick and appropriate comprehensive care. We want to buy devices that are able to be quickly lend to needy because the insurance company does not cooperate as quickly as we need. We are team of professionals – psychician, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, speech therapist – already visiting some of the patients at home, but we want to extend for all who need our help. We want to train doctors and other professionals everywhere around the country, so they could effectively help ALS patients. To ease their relatives we want to provide full care stays approximately for three days or more.

We want to build a socio-medical center that will assemle all of our profesionalls and activities., which will create a place for short stays, but also the center for cases where relatives can no longer take care of their loved ones.

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH YOUR MILLION?

When we receive a million we purchase the most needed equipment to our rental – eye movements sencors, suction unit, tablets for communication, motomed,cough assist instrument, splint for streching of spastic limbs and convalescent stays. Of course a million is the minimum that we need to start with some of these activities, with more money we could do even more.

WHO ARE WE?

We are a nonprofit organization ALSa, z.s. – a group of volunteers from the ranks of doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapist, social workers and others. Our main place of work is Neurological Clinic of the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. We want to ensure quality patient care comparable with other countries, we want them not to die in undignified conditions and pain when it is possible to offer a more tolerable alternative. We know we can help.

WHY DO WE APPEAL TO YOU?

This disease origin is not known, there is no prevention or treatment. It frequently occurs in middle age active people. It can happen to anyone, even your beloved. We appeal to you because you can help us get the resources we need so we can start to help quickly and efficiently. Hundreds of people need our help today.
