Did you know that global paper consumption has increased by 400% over the last 40 years, leading to an increase in deforestation? And over 35% of the world's harvested trees have been used for paper production?
And it's not just trees - conventional pulp bleaching with elemental chlorine releases large amounts of dioxins into the environment. Dioxins are a highly toxic persistent substance. More than 90% of human exposure to dioxins takes place through food, mainly meat, dairy products, fish, and shellfish, as dioxins accumulate in the food chain in animal fat tissue.
Hi, I'm Maky. I created my first handmade paper when I was about sixteen at the Secondary School of Applied Arts. I think I fell in love because haven't stopped making paper since. After high school, I studied Drawing and Graphics arts at the University of Ostrava and also in Gdańsk at the Academy of Fine Arts. I started making art books from handmade paper, but there was much more in my mind to create. After many years of trying to create paper from clothes or plants, I accidentally found an offer from a paper mill nearby, that was selling a paper machine called a Hollander beater. This machine arrived from New Zealand, where it was created by a local papermaker. I enthusiastically bought a Hollander beater, so it all started...
In a paper and upcycling studio, clothing waste becomes a new paper product, whether it is a sheet of paper, a book, a diary, an envelope, a lamp, or an experimental material for the production of furniture or shoes. The basis is a quality fiber from clothing made of natural materials: cotton, linen, and hemp. The clothes are cut into smaller pieces and go to the Hollander beater. In Hollander beater, it is ground together with crushed plant fibers and waste pulp. It is such an alchemy that waste turns into a new product.
I have been repairing the studio for four years, now it has reached a point where I will need more funding. Every small step is important. With your help, you will contribute to the completion of the paper studio, you will help with the buying of vats and purchasing a bookbinding press. I already have the most important thing and that's the Hollander beater, the machine is able to process clothes, plants (nettles, flax), and discarded paper pulp into new paper. But there is still a lot needed to finish the whole workspace...
