On 5/10, Václav Havel would be 80 and we are calling all who appreciate him to a celebration. A concert, Havel’s speech, Wenceslas Square full. Will it happen? We haven’t felt the need to attempt such a thing since 1989. Now, we do. Together we’ll manage.

Speaking about this year’s anniversary of Havel’s birthday, it occurred to us that it is his personality that can connect people who cherish the opportunity to live in a free, responsible, democratic, and open society. And that it’s about time to show that there are many of them, and they don’t want the opportunity to be taken away.
To commemorate Václav Havel, publicly and distinctly. To give people who respect him and appreciate his thoughts and attitudes a possibility to express their support. To remind ourselves that truth and love have a purpose and, hopefully, a firm place in life.
A stage for four great bands, a sound system for the square, large screens. Words that Václav Havel pronounced years ago, sounding even more urgent nowadays. A fascinating music programme. An introduction by Bishop Václav Malý, whose voice has been linked to Wenceslas Square since 1989. Presenter Emma Smetana. No politicians. Internet streaming available throughout the country.
The event is supported by Václav Havel Library within its year-long project Havel@80.
All that we have arranged so far did not cost much. We have an awesome and energetic team of volunteers who put their hearts into the project. But this is just the beginning and we cannot proceed further without you. We believe that we will succeed in raising money for the technical support of the event comprising the stage, sound system, screens, and streaming together with cleaning services, security etc. We will also need money to spread the information everywhere, including the places our intense social-media activity has not reached. Only then will there be hope that the idea of Wenceslas Square full of people listening to Havel again can come true…
If, all together, we can collect at least 400.000 CZK which represents a necessary foundation, we could succeed, fellow citizens.
Your participation, both in terms of money contributed and your presence at the anniversary event, is a tremendous boost to the whole venture. A token of appreciation, an interesting experience, a memento that you were part of it all, please choose from the rewards offered for your support that will make our common celebration of Havel happen.
VH80 association was founded by a group of friends, both young and middle-aged, in the eightieth-anniversary year of Václav Havel. It was created for a single reason: to subscribe, clearly and publicly, to what they consider the intellectual and moral heritage of their favourite author, brave man, extraordinary personality, and president. And to enable others to do the same – on the anniversary day at Wenceslas Square in Prague and in other cities and towns across the Czech Republic. They are not affiliated with any political party or movement, have been living happily since 1989, and have not felt the urge to do anything of this nature – until now.
We would like to see Havel's anniversary proving that the moral, social, and political principles linked to him are in no way marginal, outdated or irrelevant. We hope to demonstrate that many people who revered them in the past continue to profess them and that – more importantly – the same principles attract those who did not live to see Vaclav Havel as a dissident and perhaps were not yet able to perceive him as president.
Bishop Václav Malý, Havel’s friend and the voice of the 1989 manifestations, will open the event and Emma Smetana, a singer and presenter, will host the rest of the programme. Throughout the evening, the bands Mydy Rabycad, Korben Dallas and others will perform. All of the event’s organisers and…
