The 21st International festival of local televisions is well under way. This year it will be held from 17th to 21st June 2015, not only in Košice but also in Uzhgorod as well. “We decided on Ukraine because we think it is necessary to do the same thing there that the festival has been doing throughout its 20 years of existence – spreading democracy in local media and restoring media to its rightful place & space” says Eva Děkanovská, the director of the festival. The Festival of Local Televisions has built a unique reputation on the European media map and it is a strong forum for many reputable media workers and journalists. “Since 2014, despite its uniqueness, the festival has not enjoyed the financial support it used to have. For this reason we decided to invite “crowdfunding” via the Czech website hithit.com. If it works as it should, it will generate the necessary extra finance.”

The Festival (IFoLT) is the only event of its kind in Europe. It is the broadest forum for connecting various cultural values and dialogues. The festival supports partnership and cooperation between creators of audiovisual works .

The 21st International Festival of Local Televisions in Košice has accepted 200 films from all over the world in competition. “We are glad to see that the competition programme this year will be varied and colourful, the films really came in from all over the world. Among the film-makers there are authors from exotic countries such as India, Taiwan, Iran, Iraq, Iceland and Japan. The majority of films came from Spain. Slovak films are present in all categories” says the director of the festival, Eva Děkanovská. There are 3 main sections – Local Television, Production Company and Young Author, within which the international jury will award a “Golden Beggar” for the best film. The international jury has 7 members. The chairman of the jury is a Swiss-based writer and actor Roger Worrod. The jury has already started watching the films online. The preselection of the best films will be presented to the citizens of Kosice during the festival in Kulturpark from 17th to 19th June 2015.

A 5-day international event filled with activities cannot be organised without help. Festival responds to an urgent need next door

This year, our Festival wants to respond to an urgent need next door, in Ukraine. In cooperation with Uzhgorod’s European Media Center and Korzo internet television, the organisers are prepared to duplicate in Ukraine what the Festival has done in other parts of Europe. It was the director of this centre, Nikolaj Koshuta, who first proposed the idea of organising the festival in Ukraine. “We would like to help our colleagues create a network of producers, encourage programme-exchange and improve the media space” says the IFoLT festival director Eva Děkanovská. “There is a deeper reason for organising the festival in Ukraine. It should be perceived as a step forward towards Ukrainian media workers and Ukranian media, an act of solidarity, demonstrating our openness and willingness to share mutual know-how.”

The date of this year’s International Festival of Local Televisions has been announced. Local television delegates, independent producers and journalists from all over the world will come together in Kosice in June. This year’s festival will be held from 17th to 20th June 2015 and, based on current information and invitations, we expect guests from at least 25 countries from Europe and overseas. says Eva Děkanovská, the director of the festival. Part of the festival will be held in Ukraine, which is an innovation. After 20 years of building relationships between those who make programmes for local and regional television and almost as many years in encouraging young producers and small production companies, the International Festival of Local Televisions/Golden Beggar, held in Košice, Slovakia, wants its 21st edition to respond to an urgent need next door, in Ukraine.
